Better than your average textbook

I bought this for an online class. I have taken other online classes and found the books hard to follow when studying on my own. This book, though,was not hard to follow. The diagrams in the book are the most valuable because they give a good visual image that makes the information easier to remember. I took this 4 hour course in 4 weeks and with a different book, I would have had trouble.

Flex Format Edition

This paperback edition is just as good as the hardcover edition as far as I know. There's also a less-known edition called the flex format edition that's supposedly identical but fits in a 3-ring binder. The ISBN for that one is 978-0471752523 and they look to be even cheaper than this one ($40).

Not for beginners

Some of the negative reviews sounded like they wanted a short book that said "Do the following and you will be very rich very quick". Guess what, that book doesn't exist and will never exist. Options are very useful if used properly but to use them properly you need a deep understanding of risk and the mechanics of options. These concepts are mathematical in nature and so is this book. For a variety of reasons just buying a bunch of options is a suckers game as many have learned, but used to reduce risk as a hedge is a different matter. McMillan's other book Options as a Strategic Investment would be the place to start learning. This advanced text explains many things professionals are doing and gives insight to why the markets behave as they do. If you want to get involved with options you need to understand this book thoroughly.

Intermediate to Expert text on Options

Having never traded options before but having an engineering background, I found the text as dry as my college engineering textbooks, but as informative as ever. I finally got the hang of it by the last chapter, and found it more informative reading the second time.
I CANNOT IMAGINE TRADING OPTIONS W/O A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTS HE PRESENTS. It is not, however, intuitive to the novice options trader. It may take reading a second time to get the hang of it.

A Must Read

Lawrence G. McMillan is the author of the famous title "Options as a Strategic Investment". What's the difference between the two books? This one is entirely different: it teaches option trading in actual examples, and is not intended to be a complete definition of strategies. This is a book in which the application of options to actual trading situations is discussed. It assumes that you are already familiar with the stock market to some extent and have traded stocks but not options. There are plenty of real trading examples, many of them taken from the author's trading experience. In addition, there are a number of stories--some humorous, some more on the tragic side, that illustrate the rewards and pitfalls of trading, especially trading options. If you like the analysis of historic events in the markets, I can also recommend "The Only Three Questions That Count" by Ken Fisher, in addition to this book. If you like the history even more, I can recommend the trilogy: Financier, Titan and The Stoic by Theodore Dreiser. Seriously!

Pros:
- explains in a very interesting way the history of listed options and other historic events;
- humorous, vivid, entertaining and amusing;
- unique advises from the author's experience;
- uncovers the predictive power of options in a very detailed manner with lots of case studies
- analyses the seasonality of volatility, The January effect, Late-October Buy Point, and other patterns and dependences;
- excellent chapters about the trading philosophy;

Cons:
- Chapters about selecting the right broker, getting the quotes and understanding the order flow are outdated;
- An important technique of selling puts as a way of buying the underlying security is not covered in this book, but covered in the others first book "Options as a Strategic Investment". Warren Buffett obtains most of his stock holdings through selling puts. He got most of his Coca-Cola Holdings this way, and, recently, Burlington Northern Santa Fe. If you are interested in this technique, read chapter 19 of "Options as a Strategic Investment";
- Doesn't have a single references to other books.

There are many books about options, but this is a must read.

CAROL BRENNAN is former vice president and general manager of the Quality and Operations Center at Telcordia Technologies, where she was responsible for design, development, and implementation of the Telcordia quality management system. She has more than twenty-five years of experience in software design, development, testing, performance, maintenance, and customer support as well as quality strategy, policy, and implementation.

Very Good Book

It is amazing how much information could be packed into a book of only 250 pages (approximately). This is probably the best book one can currently buy for a good introduction to software measurement and estimation. It is both a guide for students as well as a reference for software measurement practitioners. The book contains small imperfections that can be fixed and by no means reduce its value. They will certainly be corrected in a future edition. Comments below:

- Chapter 1 / Section 1.4 about the CMMI mentions the Project Planning and Project Monitoring and Control process areas (PAs) but fails to mention the Measurement and Analysis process area - that has everything to do with the book's theme.

- Chapter 2 provides a short (and good) description of the GQM (Goal/Question/Metric) approach but fails to mention the PSM (Practical Software & Systems Measurement) methodology, even though the PSM book is listed as reference [3] at the end of the chapter. Also, Section 2.3 is titled "Method 3: Standards Driven Metrics" but does not mention the ISO/IEC 15939 standard (Software Engineering - Software Measurement Process), which is related to the CMMI Measurement and Analysis PA and also to the Practical Software & Systems Measurement initiative. Any book on Software Measurement should cover the ISO/IEC 15939 standard.

- Chapter 3 contains a very good explanation of measurement scales, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, measurement errors, accuracy, and precision.

- Chapter 4 is about software sizing. Even though the coverage is very good, the chapter fails to inform the reader that 3 of the FSM methods - IFPUG, NESMA (Netherlands Software Metrics Users Association, not even mentioned), and COSMIC have become ISO standards. It should also be said that IFPUG considers the Value Adjustment Factor optional since 2003. The main IFPUG Function Point reference, the Counting Practices Manual, is not listed as a reference at the end of the chapter.

- Chapter 5 features a good introduction to complexity measures, including McCabe's cyclomatic complexity, Halstead's measure, and the Agresti-Card-Glass system complexity metric. Object-oriented design metrics are also covered in this chapter. The author explains those measures very clearly including examples.

- Chapter 6 is about effort estimation. Again the author provides excellent and comprehensive explanations of several estimation models, such as expert opinion (including Delphi), benchmark data, analogy, proxy points, custom models, and algorithmic models. On page 96 the author directs the reader to reference [10] for the IFPUG website. As it turns out, reference [10] on page 116 points to the website of a consulting company. It would be nice to have this fixed in the next edition of the book. On page 104 COCOMO II is mentioned but the example on page 105 uses COCOMO 81. The reader should be aware that COCOMO 81 has been replaced by COCOMO II. On page 106 some estimation tools are listed, namely COCOMO, SPR, and Checkpoint. COCOMO itself is not a tool so it would have been better to use the USC COCOMO II free tool as an example, as well as commercial tools such as COSTAR and Cost Xpert. SPR is listed as a tool when it is actually a company that used to sell the Checkpoint tool that has been replaced by KnowledgePlan.

- Chapter 7 provides the reader with a very good introductory treatment of defects. Figure 7.6 on page 122 depicts a size-defect relationship that has been "linearized" through the use of a log-log scale. That should be clearly explained (the text refers to the relationship as linear). Overall this is an excellent chapter.

- Chapter 8, 9, and 10 are, respectively, about reliability, response time and availability, and measuring progress. They are all very good and I can only recommend them. Excellent explanations and references.

- Chapters 11 and 12 - Outsourcing and Financial Measures - seem a little displaced in this book, even though they can still be useful for students.

- Chapter 13 on Benchmarking is perhaps too short to give the theme a fair treatment.

- Chapter 14 on Presenting Metrics to Management is very interesting and potentially useful to measurement analysts. The author teaches the reader how to create a dashboard for all metrics to be viewed as a whole.

What I like about this book is that it deals with the most important topics of software measurement and estimation without being bulky or tedious. The language is simple and keeps the reader interested throughout the 250 pages. Recommended.

Outstanding book!

I've been working on a web application project. I needed to analyze and estimate the reliability of my project. Using the techniques presented in this book (especially chapter 7 - Defects and Defect Metrics), I was able to predict the reliability of my project. Starting at the beginning of the project, I used my history data from other projects for calculations. As I progressed to the test phase (I used incremental model), I was able to estimate the reliability based on the defects collected during the testing phase. I highly recommend this book especially if you are software engineering major.

Excellent book.

I bought this book after going through the Table of Contents. After reading some chapters, I am convinced that it is a good buy. The book is written in a simple language and is well structured with good examples thrown in. I found the chapters 'Measuring Size' and 'Estimating Effort' especially well presented. The References listed at the end of the chapters is extremely useful and allows one to explore certain topics in greater detail.

One drawback is that the problems listed at the end of the chapters do not have solution key and the FTP site is not available despite the claim on the front cover. The good news is that one of the authors (Linda) emailed me to state that creating the FTP site was her next project !!!

Overall, an excellent book on a yet to be fully understood software engineering topic.

Great Book for Beginners to Learn Economics

Let me start by saying that Patrick Welch, the author of this book, is our economics professor at Saint Louis University. He is not strict by any means and uses the most basic and introductory words possible so that everyone can learn the material. The author is a grandpa-ish type of professor and that is evident in his book.

The book starts off with an introduction to what economics is used for, and throughout the book, multiple examples with many easy to read graphs are utilized to explain topics from supply & demand, types of businesses, and how businesses and households interact with one another.

Saved me 60 bucks!

Had that sticky stuff on the binding, like it had had a sticker on it at some point. Never got the purchase receipt either. Other than that it was in like new condition, like it said. Saved almost 60 bucks versus if I had bought it from my school bookstore used. Wish they had all the books I needed for classes.

In his later years, Watson' s life took a Shakespearean turn. He struggled with his son for power, and stayed on at IBM into his eighties, endangering the empire he' d built. He became entangled in controversy by accepting a medal from Nazi Germany, a mistake that haunts his legacy today. In t late 1940s, Watson and Thomas Watson, Jr. guided IBM through the torturous transition from mechanical technology to electronic computers.

What's on My Mind About Watson

Biographies always have a slant; the subject was a "good" person or a "bad" person. While there are some writers who've painted Mr. Watson, Sr. as a "bad" person, this book is about a "good" person. The writing and editing is well done. It's a good read. If you like Thomas Watson, Sr., this book will probably help you to like him more. If you don't like Thomas Watson, Sr., this book will not change your mind and actually may reinforce your dislike.

I am giving the book three stars because it is a well-written and well-edited work but it's very much a pro-Watson work and it's attempts to refute Mr. Watson's "bad" side are lame.

In case you care, I am not a fan of both Thomas Watsons or IBM.

Information Age Biography

The first of the new generation of Information Age biographers, Kevin Maney in his book on Thomas Watson Sr. sets a template for how Gates, Dell, and other industrialists will be written about when their time comes.

The key contribution of each is the degree to which they cut the cost of information, allowing more and more of us increasing control of the means of information production with social and economic consequences that rip through our world daily. Watson was one of the most important, bridging the world between Edison and the integrated circuit.

Maney reveals a man of insufferable ego who took enormous risks, risks that not even John D. Rockefeller would have contemplated, to reshape the world for a century yet to come. How Watson did this and succeeded are the life skills of today's executives in every industry. A must read.

One of the better business biographies I've encountered

I've generally not been a huge fan of business biographies...they can get very much bogged down in transactional specifics and company arcana, not to mention shoot-from-the-hip hindsight. This Watson biography, though, is very different and exceptionally engrossing, for two reasons: One, because Maney, whose USA Today columns are pretty much always highly entertaining, is a terrific storyteller, and two, because it seems Watson was nuts enough to have stenographers in his boardroom and all kinds of other meetings so as to preserve his words and wisdom for the ages (not something today's Sarbanes-Oxley-bound CEO's are hurrying to do!). Maney took that source material and turned it into what I found to be a very interesting page turner that's a great read for anyone interested in the history of business -- any business, not just IBM.
Maney spends a fair amount of time explaining how Watson had large early-career successes at NCR, got into very deep yogurt with the feds for anti-trust activities, and then bounced back from that taint to create the world's first great technology company. It's also fascinating, given our three year old economic malaise, to see how Watson steered IBM through the Great Depression and powered it forward into the modern era.
A very vivid and worthwhile book.
