the sole reason I got a 5 on my AP Human Geography test

This book is insightful, detailed, and interesting. I actually didn't fall asleep reading it- now if only that were true for my history textbooks! This was my textbook for an AP Human Geography class I took at my school. The teacher was barely adequate, and I basically taught myself everything from this book. H.J. de Blij knows how to write well. He doesn't just give you facts, either. You're taught how to spacially analyze worldwide phenomena, not just to memorize place names. He covers everything from political geography to urban landscapes to environmental science.

This textbook is also great if you simply want to know more about the world we live in, and wish to learn from a more international, rather than American-centric, point of view.

A Very Good Book for understanding Human Geography

As someone who holds Masters degrees in both History and Social Studies Education and actually TEACHES AP Human Geography to high school freshmen, I can safely say that DeBlij and co. have come up with a winner in the new edition. I'll admit the 7th edition was filled with misrepresentations, but the new version is such an improvement, that I have discarded the often inaccurate Rubinstein book for this one.

For those who suggest buying "Geography for Dummies" be my guest. I'll just let the title speak for itself. If you look at AP Central- the home of the College Board tests, the AP Human Geography test contains about 9-10% on the basic fundamentals of geography including physical geography. DeBlij covers more than its adequate share of the subject- outside of the instructor teaching the course.

One of my favorite textbooks

I used this text in my Cultural Geography course last semester. I'm not usually one to read my textbooks, but this one was really interesting, reader friendly, and filled with lots of current examples (there's even photos of Lindsay Lohan and Tony Hawk). I'm not selling this one back (and for a starving college student--that's really saying something!)

Building the Real-Time Enterprise: An Executive Briefing by Michael Hugos is a timely compendium of lessons about tested and proofed management and operational techniques for all CIO's wanting to create successful internal IT organizations in the global village we live and work in. How is an IT organization to spend its scarce resources to enable its business to excel in a world characterized by hyper-competition and co-opetition? Hugos defines the Real-time Enterprise and systematically explains its business foundations, supported by practical examples. Short overview sections on Information Theory, Cybernetics, General Systems Theory, Total Quality Management, Six Sigma, Business Process Management, System Dynamics and Viable Systems Model, to name a few, provide contextual settings in which the roots for the modern Real-time Enterprise are to be found. The book continues by explaining how to design a real-time enterprise. It does so by motivating the need for change and dynamic management, right through descriptions of real-time observation and action chains [the Observe-Orient-Decide-Act loop, borrowed from aerial warfare]and to guidance on where to start the journey toward the Real-time Enterprise once resolved as strategy. Outstanding practicle advice

Based on over 35 years of experience leading Information Technology organziations as a CIO, I believe that the book by Hugos is a must read for both CIO's and other business function leaders. The book reflects Hugos' vast experience as a CIO and contains practical advice for both. For CIO's, Hugos not only provides realistic and common-sense advice on "what and how" to do things, but perhaps more importantly, "what and how" NOT to do things. CIO's can earn their keeps often by not falling into the trap of following the hype--many companies implement complex and expensive systems like ERP's and CRM's without compelling business case--just to "join the club." Hugos correctly points out that often adding futures and functions to existing well-run systems is a better (safer, faster, cheaper) way to address business needs.

His practical advice to functinal business leaders also hit the target. Particularly valuable are his suggestions on how to ensure IT projects should be structured to succeed and once they are started, how to make sure they are implemented on time and on budget.

Useful book for the busy executive: I am the CFO of my organization and manage many operating units. I have read Mr. Hugos' book and found it refreshing, to the point and extremely useful. In particular the last chapter has armed me with all of the important questions that provide the framework for keeping all projects on task and within budget. These questions provide a common communication framework between technical people and business unit managers that result in projects that stay focused and on track.

Too Wordy

In our graduate level course, we were forced to use this terrible book. The committee, for some reason, approved this book even if the professors dislike it. The book problems are very wordy and the book does not contain all the information to complete the problem. After much outcry of my classmates, our professor decided to drop the book. We now use our professor's notes and problems.

Please choose another graduate level textbook.

This book is truly engaging and many chapters are simply memorable.

Unlike many similarly hefty texts, this new edition of Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics gives a lucid, informative and insightful approach to the laws of thermodynamics and their real-world applications. Moreover, it also reports on the latest advances made based on the author's constructal theory. The text flows smoothly, with excellent illustrations and has been meticulously proofread, a credit to both Dr. Bejan and his editors.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this 3rd edition of Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics; therefore, I can most sincerely recommend it. In summary: a must-read in the field for university students and scientific researchers alike.

About the Author
ENE I. ETTE, PhD, is a Fellow of the American Colleges of Clinical Pharmacy and Clinical Pharmacology. He is the President/CEO of Anoixis Corp. and was formerly the senior director and head of clinical pharmacology at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He is also an adjunct professor of applied pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Ette was a pioneer pharmacometric staff in the Office of Clinical Pharmacology and Biopharmaceutics at the Food and Drug Administration, where he developed the popular reference Guidance for Industry: Population Pharmacokinetics. From 1989 –2001, he was an FDA Consultant. In recognition of his contributions to clinical pharmacy and clinical pharmacology, Dr. Ette is the recipient of The American College of Clinical Pharmacy's Russell Miller Award. He is also the 2006 recipient of The American College of Clinical Pharmacy's Therapeutic Frontiers Lecture Award. Dr. Ette is chairman of the pharmacometrics panel of The Annals of Pharmacotherapy editorial board.

PAUL J. WILLIAMS, PharmD, is a Fellow of the American Colleges of Clinical Pharmacy and Clinical Pharmacology and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacy Practice at the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Dr. Williams is the Vice President, Strategic Consulting, West Coast Operations in Anoixis Corp. and was formerly a partner at Trials by Design, LLC, a clinical consulting company, and member of the editorial board for The Annals of Pharmacotherapy. Dr. Williams is the 2006 winner of the University of the Pacific Faculty Research Award, the Long's Faculty Fellowship, and Teacher of the Year.
