VALUABLE, VALID AND VIVID SNAPSHOT OF THE HR PROFESSION!

To create this collection the editors contacted thought leaders and asked them "What is the future of HR?" They responded with the essays that make up this work. Its 45 brief chapters, contributed by 64 HR gurus, cover a broad spectrum of issues confronting the field. The chapters were clustered into nine parts, with the springboard clause of "In the future, an effective HR professional must..." These nine parts focus on outcomes and results-not actions or activities. This non-tradition (i.e., not based on specialized functions) organization of the book's content captures a dynamic, value-generating spirit. The authors hope they have provided a "road map for the profession," spotlighting how HR practitioners can constantly reinvent themselves to continue being of value people, organizations, and societies.

The books' core value is that it encompasses so many key and leading-edge topics written by so many people who are at the forefront of forging the field's future. But each chapter has its own stand alone merit; quite a few have considerable originality and 'push the envelop.' For example, in Chapter 14, "Changing Mental Models: HR's Most Important Task," Jeffrey Pfeffer argues that aside from being keepers and analysts of organization culture, HR needs to be concerned with the mental models and mindsets of the people of the company, particularly its leaders. Page-forward to chapter 30; there, Jac Fitz-Enz has a slightly different take; he concludes that to be a strategic business partner, HR leaders must become more culture managers than anything else-"there is no better place to start than with the organization's culture." Such thought-provoking views are typical of this book and distinguish it as lively, varied and ambitious collection of substantive thinking. Clearly, this is not a fast-read; given its agenda and scope-that's a virtue.

As an HR consultant and practitioner (HRconsultant.com, Partner, Stern & Associates), as well as a reviewer, I find this book to be a valuable, valid, and vivid snapshot of where the HR field is, where it's likely to be heading, and the many challenges it's confronting. No question about it, there's a lot of rewarding reading in this book.

The Future of Human Resource Management by Ulrich et al.

The authors describe human resource management as both an art and

a science. It is an art because we are required to motivate,

build alliances, assume new roles, adopt to the corporate culture

and collaborate on mutually beneficial ventures.

Human Resource management issues range from functional experience

to talent management in an organization. An HR advisor is

knowledgable on core competencies . Generally, such a team member

is trusted by superiors to provide the talent necessary to

accomplish corporate goals. Often, it is necessary to adapt the

corporate culture to take full advantage of business conditions.

Employees must focus on building markets of customers locally

and globally. This task requires both new skills and a considerable technical analysis. The HR management process

is a science in that there are reams of statistical data to

sort and interpret for senior management, customers and governmental units at every level.

This work is a good primer for the Human Resource function in

an organization both large and small.

Business Imperative/Business Critical

If you are interested in the critical issues facing Human Resources today and business leadership in general, this text is a must. This book is for the HR practitioner and corporate leaders. The strategic business partner role is the future of Human Resources as the tactical and transactional basics of HR are either being exported outside of HR departments or outsourced. The HR role today is business focused, business critical and business imperative. All the critical isses facing HR are discussed in this anthology - from the strategic national issues, regional issues and globalization. I highly recommend. I also recommend the first addition of this series "Tomorrow's HR Management: 48 Thought Leaders Call For Change." Thanks Amazon for bringing both books to my attention.

About the Author
JIAN LI, PhD, is Professor and Director of the Spectral Analysis Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida. She has coedited one book, coauthored one book and two book chapters, and published approximately 250 refereed technical conference contributions and journal papers, many of which are on topics related to array signal processing.

PETRE STOICA, PhD, is Professor of System Modeling in the Department of Systems and Control at Uppsala University, Sweden. He has coedited two books, coauthored nine books, and published approximately 500 refereed technical conference contributions and journal papers, many of which are on topics related to array signal processing.

Elaine Fletcher-Janzen, Ph.D., teaches at the University of Northern Colorado and consults to area school districts. She also serves as a trainer for American Guidance Systems, a publisher of clinical assessment instruments for school psychologists. She is the coeditor of the Handbook of School Neuropsychology (with Cecil Reynolds and Rik D'Amato).

Cecil Reynolds, Ph.D., is Professor of Educational Psychology and Professor of Neuroscience at Texas A&M University. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including the Handbook of School Psychology (with Terry Gutkin, Wiley), and several Essentials books (Essentials of Behavioral Assessment, with Randy Kamphaus and Michael Ramsay, and Essentials of Assessment with Brief Intelligence Tests, with Liz Lichtenberger). He has also developed a number of psychological assessment instruments, including the RIAS (published by PAR) and the BASC (published by AGS).

Both authors have collaborated on several previous projects, including the Encyclopedia of Special Education, Second Edition, the Concise Encyclopedia of Special Education, Second Edition, and the Childhood Disorders Diagnostic Desk Reference.

Very organized - fast read - very happy

I have read close to 5 major books on warehousing, including Excellence in Warehouse Managment. I found most to be little more than books defining warehouse terminology. Bragg has clear ideas to improve warehousing (inventory management). "Nearly 200" says the dustjacket. I'd buy this one again.

This book appears to be for companies with large warehouses. My company has a small area designated as a mezzanine to keep products both company owned and customer owned. I am, however, able to pull some ideas from this book.

About the Author

This book is divided into five parts. Each part is designed to help you in progressing towards the publishing of a book/play/poem/story for children. This is not a quick process. The key ingredient to this book being successful is that the book shows you what is involved.
In the first section of the book, Seuling discusses the world of children's books. This will give you an idea of the history of children's books and help you become familiar with the lingo.
In the second and third sections (Developing Your Ideas and Writing Your Book, respectively), she talks about some of the pitfalls (she calls sabotage) and talks about what is required for different kinds of books (for instance, what is needed for an Easy Reader versus a Chapter Book). To help you, the author includes the titles of books that best exemplify the kind of book she is discussing. Now, you can check out the book and see the example for yourself.
In the fourth and fifth sections (Selling Your Book and A Publisher in Your Future), she explains how the publishing field works. With this information in hand, you can make your submission more professional and increase your chances of getting a contract.
For each chapter in the book, she summarizes the key points and gives you "assignments" which will help you internalize the material and become an expert. The only problem with the assignments is that there is no right or wrong answer. You will need to assume that you are doing it correctly. If you follow the assignments, however, you will learn a lot.
Most importantly, Seuling has appendices that list a wealth of information on helping you become a successful writer for children. If nothing else, the book is worth it for those lists (things like marketing information, editorial services, references, and reviews of children's books). I would recommend this book for anyone thinking of writing for children.

fascinating behind the scenes view of the life in the gun lobby

I wasn't sure what I was going to get when I picked up "Ricochet" but it turned out to be a page turner.

Richard Feldman is a skillful writer and an engaging story teller. His prose is easily approachable, passionate, and at the same time, avoids emotional extremes and bumper sticker slogans -- it's easy to see how he has been such a successful lobbiest.

The "confessions" aren't ideological regrets, but rather the kiss-and-tell story of internecine warfare at one of America's largest and most powerful lobbying groups. Feldman presents the National Rifle Association to be not exactly the 800 lb gorilla many people had always assumed -- but rather a pack of 80 lb chimpanzees that sometimes work together towards a common goal but also spend a lot of time poking one another in the eyes.

At the book's core, divergent factions in the NRA (one spearheaded by Feldman) disagree fundamentally on the best way to bring their cause forward -- the reader can decide which (if either) seems more practical. A fascinating read, whatever your position on guns. "Ricochet" seems to tell a universal tale -- one assumes that the very same types of arguments are going on in the back rooms of Greenpeace or any other lobbying group staffed by passionate and dedicated idealists.

A Timely Insider's Look at the Gun Rights Debate

In 1986 I was fortunate to have had a front row seat watching Richie Feldman fight against the forces of darkness in the person of the anti-gun Sheriff of Suffolk County (NY), who was refusing to allow civilians to own the then new Glock pistols.

NRA-ILA sent Feldman who had two conversations with the Sheriff, the first explaining that his decision was based on demonstrably erroneous information. When the official did nothing, several months later Feldman told him very directly: stop the foolishness about Glocks, or we're going to take you to court and pull your pants down.

The Sheriff folded within the month!

I've followed Feldman's career ever since, the savvy (dare I say "pushy?") self-described Jewish-kid-from-the-Five-Towns. I think the "pushy" is what I like the most in his defense of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. That, and one of his credos: "You fight fire with napalm!"

"Ricochet: Confessions of a Gun Lobbyist" is an insider's view from the trenches, and if anyone is concerned that it's an "NRA puff piece," that organization (of which I am a Life Member) will undoubtedly be more antagonistic toward the book than say the anti-gun "Brady Bunch." Feldman chronicles the evolution of the venerable organization from a collection of shooting sports enthusiasts into, under the formidible leadership of Harlon Carter, a dedicated group of Second Amendment stalwarts, and then after Carter's death, the NRA's transformation into a cynical fund-raising machine with Wayne LaPierre and the PR firm of Ackerman-McQueen running things irrespective of Members' wishes.

Along the way Feldman discusses the machinations involved in gaining passage of the McClure-Volkmer bill in 1986, the behind-the-scenes wrangling on the Bernie Goetz "subway vigilante" event, and how the newest threat to firearms ownership rose with the filing of municipal lawsuits against the gun industry.

"Ricochet: Confessions of a Gun Lobbyist" is a fascinating and well-told chronicle of the past quarter of a century of the conflict between gun rights activists and firearms prohibitionists. (See [...] for a fuller discission.)

A very fine book on ins and outs of lobbying

Sorta like old home week for me...

I'd quite agree you can't judge this book by its press or blog reviews. The press naturally picked up on Richard's criticism of NRA fundraising and expenditures, and the bloggers (except me, who refused to blog without reading it) reacted to that. Both made the book seem antigun, when it's very far from that. As I would have guessed, because I last saw the author at the private ceremony to dedicate the bronze of Harlon Carter: Harlon's family would not have singled him out for invitation unless he was respected by them.

The book is exceptionally clearly written, and definitely a page turner. I think I took one break from reading its 300+ pages. If anyone wants to see what it's like to be a lobbyist, this is the book for them. Just one episode: at one point NY Gov. Mario Cuomo holds a tense meeting with the author and others, and tries to break the ice by deliberately sitting on a whoopee cushion. It didn't go over very well...
