About the Author
For the last several years, Ping Zhang has been an indefatigable proponent for HCI in the IS discipline.  She has organized tracks at the major IS conferences, published research in prominent journals, and is now pushing to add the course to the required IS curriculum.  She has become the “face of HCI” in the IS community.  Ping earned her PhD in MIS at UT-Austin and teaches at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University.

Her co-authors Dov Te’eni and Jane Carey have been writing in the area for many years.  Te’eni received his PhD in MIS from Tel Aviv University and teaches at Bar Ilan University in Israel.  He spent several years teaching at Case Western and has been a visiting professor at Yale and NYU, Oxford and Warwick in the UK, and Waterloo in Canada.  He is well connected to the worldwide IS community and attends all major IS conferences.  Carey received her PhD at the University of Mississippi and teaches at ASU-West after four years at Texas A&M.

Wayyyy outdated!

I cannot believe my professor picked this extremely outdated book. The book was originally drafted in the 1990s, and last updated in 2003.

MUCH has changed in the way humans interact with computers since 2003. Touch screens, mobile apps, voice commands, etc.... are so much more prevalent. Although many principles hold true despite technological advances, the book's dated examples and predictions of technologies that would catch on are simply distracting and frustrating.

Arrived in great shape

I haven't gotten to far into the book, but it arrived in great shape. The book is older, so the content is somewhat dated (so far more talk of PDAs rather then smart phones)

About the Author
FRANK J. FABOZZI, PhD, CFA, CPA, is the Frederick Frank Adjunct Professor of Finance at Yale University's School of Management. He is also a Fellow of the International Center for Finance at Yale University. Prior to joining the Yale faculty, Fabozzi was a visiting professor of finance in the Sloan School of Management at MIT. Fabozzi has authored and edited many acclaimed books in finance and is also the Editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

STEVEN V. MANN, PhD, is Professor of Finance at the Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina. He has coauthored four previous books and numerous articles in the area of investments, primarily fixed-income securities and derivatives. an education about repos

The chapters are written by various people, often active in companies involved in creating or trading these securities or repos. Thus, an author from Countrywide Securities, and another from Ernst and Young. Also, the book is very recent.

Hence, you get a good education in current understanding and practices involving the lending of securities. There is a natural progression in logic, from the base securities to options and repos that are derivatives of this base. Plus, several chapters address the key issue of what are the various types of risks involved, and how to quantify these.

I found the book to be excellent and informative. Being that Sec Lending and Repo for me personally have been learned in a second hand manner when rolling out Global One at UBS NA in 98, and setting up Martini Repo's Back End for Fortis, understanding these business models without such a book as Frank Fabozzi's had been challenging.

I have given it one read, and will reread, as any book I view should be read at least twice if not more. In particular, I enjoyed seeing the evolution of Securities Lending. I had expected to see more on Settlement and Clearing and plan to look for books on this too.

Two of the questions provoked in the first read was 'How much is the Industry Actually Leveraged'. In other words, in terms of the possible shorting on the loan itself from the Lender; and if the Lender is also a Borrower from another Lender; and what operation controls should be in place in order to not make duplicate loans of the same security?

In particular , I liked the detailed description of evaluating collateral ( both on book, and off book )

Very few books cover this subject are so comprehensively for the non-practitioner. I really felt I had a grip on Securities Lending and Finance by the time I finished this book.

Practical and readable advice on ESOPs

Larry Cook has done a wonderful job in writing a book on ESOPs that is practical, readable and understandable. He accomplishes this feat even though the formation, valuation and maintenance of ESOPs can be a difficult endeavor given the complexities and nuances surrounding this area. Although titled "Financial Valuation of Employee Stock Ownership Plan Shares," it includes good insight into the decisions that go into whether to form an ESOP and whether an ESOP is feasible for a given company. For example, chapter 2 includes a very interesting story of a CFO that went through the process with two companies. He also presents his thoughts on the controversial areas of the actual valuation of a company for ESOP purposes as well as the DOL, tax and financial reporting requirements. The two appendices include the DOL proposed regs and the IRS training class materials regarding examination of ESOPs. In summary, Mr. Cook's book is an important read for business owners, Plan Trustees, CPAs, Appraisers and Financial Advisers and should be a part of any business library.

An Important Addition to Your Business Valuation Library

Financial Valuation of Employee Stock Ownership Plan Shares is a great resource for anyone looking to learn about ESOPS. The book takes a business owner's perspective in walking the reader through the elements of a good plan. Often overlooked when establishing an ESOP is the question of whether an ESOP even makes sense. This book devotes an entire chapter to that very question of who makes a good ESOP candidate. But the heart of the book is the focus on determining the value of ESOP shares. In this area, Cook goes into great detail on every aspect of ESOP valuation from independence issues and governing case law to control vs. minority positions. He covers repurchase obligations, adequate consideration, and phantom equity. One thing that really sets the book apart from other valuation tomes is the great supporting material like the great 70 page Appendix containing the IRS training guide to examining ESOPS. No business valuation library will be complete without Financial Valuation of Employee Stock Ownership Plan Shares.

This text is a good overview of ESOPs, when one makes sense for a business owner, how an ESOP can help motivate a company's employees, legal issues, and share valuation (required by law). It is a readable and practical text that should be of value to business advisors, business owners, and valuation specialists. ESOPs are highly regulated by the government and must follow the requirements both at formation and on a continuing basis. There is a cost to setting up and maintaining an ESOP but there can be significant benefits for the business owner. Some are financial and other benefits are non-financial such as business succession.

Even though the book's title suggests it is primarily about valuation, it has a lot of coverage on practical aspects of whether it makes sense for a business to establish an ESOP and the regulatory environment. This should be of interest to business advisors and business owners.

For the valuation specialist, the book covers factors in valuing the company's shares that are unique to ESOPs - primarily due to government regulation. Those factors include: the impact of ESOP leverage, minority/control attributes of the shares, repurchase obligations, adequate consideration, and tax issues.

Jam-packed with info on Development, sparse on Design

I couldn't put this book down. It contains a good description of instrumentation, including analog and digital filtering, signal conditioning, data acquisition. The authors' background is in cardiac care (pacemakers, etc.), and the book seems to focus a great deal on patient contact scenarios, whereas I would have preferred some discussion of instrumentation of other signals such as optical techniques (e.g. pulse oximetry), thermography, perhaps imaging technologies. It's a great book for anyone doing work with defibrillators/pacemakers, myography.

Medical Compliance: This book is a *fantastic* reference for anyone who needs to take a medical device through regulatory compliance. It includes a succint introduction to getting through the FDA mazz, plus several chapters dedicated to EMC (radiated/conducted emissions & suceptibility, etc.) and safety.

Although you'll find a decent quantity of equations and theory, the book is extremely practical and hands-on, including tons of clear schematics for various affordable test circuits (field probes, Hipot, leakage, etc.), and simple, direct approaches to testing and construction.

If you're looking strictly for a book on medical instrumentation, this is probably not enough. You won't find details of advanced filtering (e.g., adaptive noise cancellation), chopper detectors, fuzzy modeling & logic, algorithms, etc. But even though it's sparse on "design", this book is very strong on "development". Note the emphasis on FDA in this book, and very little mention of the European Medical Device directives (which, admittedly, are somewhat harmonized).
